Embracing Change: A Journey Through Marketing Evolution
Change is the only constant, especially in the world of marketing. My career, which began in the mid-1980s with Toyota, has been a testament to the power of adaptability and the importance of embracing new technologies.
Back then, marketing was confined to traditional channels: TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, and billboards. There was no social media, no email marketing, and certainly no smartphones. The landscape was simpler but also limited. Over the years, I've witnessed—and been a part of—the incredible transformation that technology has brought to our field.
One pivotal moment for me was during my time at Exposure Media, my own agency, when I made my first social media post on LinkedIn. Watching the engagement grow, from just a few likes to a broader audience, was eye-opening. It was clear that digital marketing was not just a trend but a revolutionary shift in how we connect with audiences.
This adaptation didn't stop at social media. I've seen the printing industry evolve from art boards and overlays to digital printing, drastically cutting down production times from weeks to hours. Photography, too, has transitioned from traditional film to instant digital feedback, revolutionizing how we capture and refine images.
Trade shows have also undergone a remarkable transformation. What used to be simple models or displays has evolved into immersive experiences with large digital walls, interactive touchscreens, and see-through monitors. Lead capturing has shifted from collecting business cards to instantly scanning badges, integrating data into CRM systems like HubSpot for immediate follow-up. This has enabled quicker and more efficient connections with potential clients.
Even now, in my current role, staying ahead means embracing the latest advancements like AI. From site builders with WYSIWYG editors that make web development quicker to AI-driven tools that enhance our marketing strategies, staying adaptable is vital.
The marketing landscape will continue to evolve, and our ability to embrace change will define our success. Whether it's leveraging new platforms or integrating cutting-edge technology, the journey is about staying curious and adaptable.
